A night of storms and lightning filled the skies over the kingdom of Noriiland. The kind of night where even the bravest of men wouldn't dare venture out of their homes. But for me, Jeeraka the Witch of Noriiland, it was just another night of scheming and plotting. I am a formidable witch, with long black hair that flows like a river of ink behind me. I have piercing eyes that seem to see right through you, and a wicked smile that can strike fear into the hearts of even the most stalwart of warriors.
For years, I have been the nemesis of Queen Joan, the ruler of Noriiland. She is a just and fair leader, beloved by her people, but I always harbored a deep resentment for the queen, and was determined to bring her down. I would stop at nothing to win my battle with her. I spent my days locked away in my dark tower, brewing potions and casting spells, seeking any means by which I could overthrow the queen. And on this night, as the storm raged outside, I finally found a way. I shrieked with glee as I mixed a powerful potion, which would make me stronger and more powerful than ever. I smiled as I lifted the potion to my lips and took a long, slow sip.
But I was tricked. As the potion flowed through my veins, I began to feel a strange sensation take over my body. I started to convulse and shake, and I realized with horror that the potion I concocted was not what I thought it was. Queen Joan had employed a sorcerer who somehow laced one of my ingredients with a counter-spell that would ultimately be my undoing. It would turn me into a good witch, one who would eventually work and support the Queen. I searched my laboratory for a counter potion, but it was too late. I could feel the evil I had known for decades recede from my body. I fell to the floor weeping in despair and soon fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, I awoke to a ray of sunlight falling on my eyes. I got up and looked into my magic mirror and there I was, no longer a wrinkled, old hag, but a fierce looking younger woman. You may laugh after seeing my picture, but the change was drastic. Even so, I still felt powerful but had no idea what I would use my powers for. Suddenly there was a knock on the door and when I opened it, there stood the Queen. She embraced me and I invited her into my dwelling. We talked for hours and ultimately, she wanted to see me become the official witch of Noriiland.
I told her that I wasn’t sure I wanted to do that. I kind of like being a freelance witch, I told her. She said that she understood. She got up, walked to the door, and turned to me and said “Think about. I’ll give you until tomorrow. We’ll work it out.” And she left. I sat in my large conjuring chair and laughed and thought to myself, “Yes I will think about it.”
